The Palm WebOS – no doubt may provide itself brightly to tablet life. The news site recommends that the PalmPad has very similar hardware to the iPad, with a few amazing additions – specially, a built-in mini HDMI port, a USB 3.0 connection and a couple of cameras (1.3-megapixel on the front and 3-megapixel on the back, both with LED flashes).

The leaked specs don’t offer a clue as to what’s under the hood of the PalmPad, nor a recommended retail price and with such similarities to the iPad, these are the aspects we’ll be most interested in learning in two weeks’ time.

UPDATE: It seems it won’t be all customers that will be getting an update directly – some may have to wait weeks, according to this from T-Mobile:

As you will have seen HTC have announced that Android 2.2 will begin rolling out for the HTC Wildfire this week. We are satisfied that our customers with T-Mobile branded handsets will be receiving this update at the same time.

HTC only announced the new update would be obtainable yesterday and almost directly by Vodafone as it was available to our customer.

Flash Lite: better than nothing

The fresh update get basics like Wi-Fi hotspots, improved performance and camera tweaks to the HTC Wildfire, but Live Wallpaper and Flash 10.1 are not included our hardware limitations.

One great feature of the new N8 is that it comes in a range of colours from white, blue, green, orange and grey, where as the iPhone 4 is one set colour. The iPhone 4 is also slightly heavier as well.

The N8 and iPhone 4 has a camera that is built in the phone. The Nokia N8’s camera takes photos with an unheard of resolution of 12 megapixels for a camera phone. This is much more than the iPhone 4’s 5 megapixel photos.

The touchscreen displays on both phones are similar at 3.5 inches but the N8 also has a high resolution, with clearer pictures and videos. Only time will tell if the new Nokia N8 will match the Apple iPhone 4.

The QWERTY slider Symbian^3 smartphone was originally due to be released in 2011. The E7 has targeted at business users and comes with MicrosoftExchange ActiveSync for accessing and editing work documents and real-time email functionality.

It also has a four-inch ClearBlack AMOLED touchscreen, an eight-megapixel camera, built in media player, 680MHz processor, HDMI slot and integrated social media.

It is the fourth Nokia phone to run on Symbian^3 – following the Nokia N8 with its 12-megapixel camera, the Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-10.

Nokia is yet to confirm how much the Nokia E7 will cost or which networks will be supplying it.

The Sony Ericsson Cedar is a pretty basic phone except for its support for 3G connectivity. The Cedar has a 2.2in TFT color screen with a resolution of 240×320. It’s pretty light at 84g and sports a normal ‘candy bar’ design. The Cedar also has a 2Mp fixed-focus camera with no flash. It supports 3G and Bluetooth but not GPS.

The Sony Ericsson Cedar’s hardware connectivity is taken care of by a microUSB port and a 3.5mm headphones jack, and storage by 280MB of internal storage and microSD card support up to 16GB.

This is generally easy to use and figure out, although it does tend to get a little sluggish under duress. The speed of opening menus and jumping between applications isn’t all that great.

While the Sony Ericsson Cedar means well with its 3G support, its default NetFront browser doesn’t exactly encourage web browsing. The Sony Ericsson Cedar’s 2Mp camera performs exactly the way you’d expect – it isn’t the worst camera ever, but it certainly isn’t very good. The images we shot with the camera had oversaturated colors and pretty low levels of details.

Video recording is just about average with videos that look okay but with very choppy framerates. Call quality is also really good, with the phone maintaining reception even in our basement where mobile phone reception normally goes to die.

HP has reportedly announced that the smartphone will ship on 12 November, but told that no shipping date has been confirmed. While the manufacturer remains tight-lipped about the release date and price, it is likely that the Pre 2 is ready to ship in UK, having been available in France since the end of October.

The form factor will remain the same as its predecessor, and Palm has opted to retain the 3.1in multi-touch HVGA screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

One of the key upgrades to the Pre 2 includes the latest version of Palm’s mobile operating system, WebOS 2, which supports multitasking with open applications grouped together in card stacks.

Hardware updates include a 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a glass screen and a streamlined design. The handset also comes with 16GB of internal storage, and supports use as a USB mass storage device.

HP will be hoping that the revamped device can deliver strong sales, unlike the Palm Pre and Pre Plus devices which, while critically acclaimed, and struggled to take on the iPhone and BlackBerry.
